How to Find Bed Bugs on Mattresses

Bed Bugs are small parasitic insects that feed off the blood of humans and animals alike. They are wingless and reddish-brown in hue, ranging in size from 1 to 7 mm. These pests are frequently discovered in mattresses because they thrive in a warm, dark habitat which allows them to hide and produce their eggs. There are a few things you may do to see  when you have bed bugs in your mattress.

The first step is to inspect your mattress for bed bugs. Check the seams, tufts, and folds of the mattress for any signs of these pests. Bed bugs often leave behind small brown spots on mattresses where they have fed. You may also see small bloodstains on the fabric from crushed bed bugs.

If you suspect you have bed bugs but are not sure, you can try setting a piece of white paper or tape on the mattress and checking it after a few hours. Another way to check for bed bugs is to use a flashlight to look for them in the cracks and crevices of the mattress.

How to Find Bed Bug Bites

Bed bug bites often emerge on the skin as tiny, red lumps. They are usually seen in groups of three or more and can leave your skin irritated. Look for these bites on your body if you believe you have been bitten by bed bugs. They are frequently seen on the face, neck, arms, and legs.

What do Bed Bugs Look Like?

Adult bed bugs are reddish-brown in appearance and roughly the size of an apple seed. Nymphs (baby bed bugs) are smaller and more transparent than adults. The eggs are whitish and roughly 1 mm long. If there is an infestation, you may find all stages of these parasites on your mattress.

How to Treat Bed Bug Infestations

If you find bed bugs in your mattress, it is important to treat them immediately so they do not spread to other areas of your home. There are a few different options when it comes to treating bed bug infestations:

  • Use a vacuum cleaner with a strong suction to remove bed bugs from the mattress. Be sure to dispose of the vacuum bag outside your home immediately afterwards so the bed bugs cannot escape and infest other areas of your home.
  • Apply a biocide specifically designed for treating bed bugs directly to the mattress following the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
  • Wash all clothing, linens, and curtains in hot water (at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit) and dry them on high heat settings to kill any remaining bed bugs or eggs.

Calling a Professional for Bed Bug Infestations

While there are options to treat bed bugs yourself, a bed bug infestation can be extremely difficult to treat on your own.  If you suspect you have bed bugs, it is best to get help from a professional pest control company. These experts will thoroughly inspect your mattress and home for bed bug infestations, and they use the latest treatment methods to eliminate these pests for good.
