Bugs That Look Like Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are not considered extremely dangerous insects, but they do pose varying levels of safety and health risks to people. These insects are so aptly named given their choice of dwelling within our homes, mattresses, beds, sofas, foams, and so on. Since we do lie, sit, and sleep on these things, if there’s an infestation, its important to be aware of the different signs of bed bugs as well.

Their bites can leave little to no mark to some but may cause allergic reactions to others. Given the risks, we must know how to identify bed bugs as well as other bugs in order to be wary of signs of bed bugs in our homes. Let’s get to know them more.

What Are Bed Bugs and What Do They Look Like?

Bed bugs are wingless, reddish-colored bugs that are small and flat. Their size may range from 1mm to 7mm. Bed bugs are known to suck blood from both humans and animals, so they are not only a danger to you but to your pets too. Even if you don’t see any signs of bed bugs, there could be other insects in your home.

Similar Looking Bugs

Bed bugs and signs of bed bugs sound easy enough to identify, but there are plenty of other bugs that look just like them. While its good to be safe around potential signs of bed bugs, you don’t want to jump to any conclusions until you understand the full picture.

Bat Bugs

Bat bugs are small, flat, and reddish-brown bugs too, so you can understand how they can be confused with bed bugs. They are the most similar-looking insects to bed bugs with the only distinction being their long hair which is pretty hard to discern.

The good thing is, as the name implies, they do not hang around our houses or mattresses. Instead, they feed on bats in caves.

Booklice are bed bug-looking insects that you may find near your bed. They also grow around 1mm to 6mm but are thinner, softer, and have segmented bodies. Their color is their biggest tell, they are either light brown or creamy yellow. Booklice though can fly and, while they don’t bite, their decomposing bodies may trigger asthma attacks.

Spider Beetles

Spider Beetles are the closest species of spider that looks like bed bugs. They are reddish to black in color and grow at a pretty similar size. They do have long legs, as well as antennae, though, and hairy bodies.

Fleas

Fleas do not just resemble bed bugs in physical traits, but they also cause as much irritation, and they can be found in our homes. They are hard to catch too because they are small and quick to jump.

Cockroach Nymphs

Cockroaches that have just hatched from their eggs within a short amount of time will look like bed bugs. The hard thing about them is that they differ in color all over the world.

Check on your pets to see if they might be harboring ticks. They usually stick to your walls and have a round body that inflates when filled with blood.

Some other bugs that look eerily alike bed bugs are head lice, carpet beetles, swallow bugs, mites, and termites.

Similar Looking Bites and Prevention

Mosquito bites, mite bites, and flea bites are only a few of what look similar to bed bug bites. The way to find signs of bed bugs is to actually see a bed bug within your vicinity or get it checked by your doctor if you start having allergic reactions.

As they say, prevention is better than cure, so it’s important to know the signs of bed bugs. Clean your place and eliminate clutter, most especially in your bedroom, to prevent bed bugs from infesting your home.
