When you’re going on a vacation the last thing you want to worry about is bed bugs. Unfortunately, finding bed bugs in hotels is probably more common than you think. Where do the bed bugs come from and how can you tell if your hotel is infested? We’ll go over that here.
Bed Bugs in Hotels
You may think that you’d only find bed bugs at motels or lower quality hotels, but even 5 star hotels can have bed bug problems. All it takes is one person accidentally bringing bed bugs in their luggage to your hotel to cause a problem. The bed bugs can breed and quickly start multiplying. However, there are a few ways that you can figure out if your hotel has a bed bug problem or not.
Bed Bug Feces
Even though bed bugs are small, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to find them and the mess they leave behind. There are a few tell-tale signs that your hotel room has a bed bug infestation. Firstly, check the sheets, blankets, and pillow cases to see if there are any tiny brown droppings left behind from the bed bugs. Even though for humans it’s common sense to separate your eating area from where you go to the bathroom, for bed bugs this isn’t the case. They have no problem using your bed as a toilet after they feed on you which is why you should be looking for their feces scattered around the bedding. They also leave.
Blood Spots
Bed bugs become engorged with blood after a feeding session the same as mosquitoes do. One reason they feed on you while you’re asleep is because you’re normally pretty still, but that’s not always the case. You may end up moving around in the middle of the night and squashing one of your tiny intruders. Since they’ll more than likely be filled with blood, there will be a blood spot on the bedding from crushing their body.
Sniffing Bed Bugs Out
Seeing the clues that bed bugs leave behind isn’t the only way to tell if there are bed bugs. People have described the smell of a bed bug in different ways, but most people agree that it’s not pleasant.. It’s mostly commonly referred to as a musty smell and typically only noticeable when there are large numbers of bed bugs. There are a few things that give off the musty odor, including bed bug droppings and also when a bed bug is crushed.
Bed Bugs Sightings
Finding some droppings or blood spots can give you a pretty good idea of whether or not you have a bed bug problem. The ultimate proof is finding the bed bugs themselves. Whether it’s day or night, bed bugs live on your bed. Even though it may not be immediately obvious you need to look a little harder. Look both on the underside of the bed sheets and on the mattress. Bed bugs like to hide in small dark areas. So make a thorough check between the crevices of your mattress and bed lining. Not only do bed bugs like to hang out there, but they also lay eggs in those same spots. The eggs are hard to see but you may find a cluster of little white eggs about the side of a pinhead.
